MEM20422 Certificate II in Engineering Pathways

This pre-employment program has been designed for someone who enjoys problem solving, likes working with their hands and likes working in a team environment. The course will provide successful students with a raft of transferrable skills that can be used across a number of trade disciplines. You will have the ability to cut, shape, bend, and mould metal products to fabricate parts. You will need to set up and operate handheld and machine tools including computer aided machines. You will assemble parts and structures by measuring and lining up and joining them by, bolting, riveting, or using adhesives. At the completion you will need to finish your product by cleaning, polishing, or by applying protective or decorative coatings.

This program applies to a learning and assessment environment where access to structured on-the-job learning in a workplace may not be available. This qualification is intended for simulated work environments.

This program is intended for people interested in exposure the robotics and automation of the engineering related working environment with a view of entering employment in this area. It will equip graduates with knowledge and skills which will enhance their prospects for an apprenticeship, traineeships or general employment in an engineering-related workplace.

Although there will be some theory component to this course the course will be structured around a major practical project. Understanding 2D & 3D design packages will be a key element for this program as 3D printers will be used to prototype the project. Programming skills around robotics will also be a major component in getting you project to come to life. Once the 1st stage of the project is completed students will need to research, design and then develop their own ideas around automation and robotics.

People who like practical, mechanical and computer tasks, are good with their hands and have an aptitude for technical tasks will be well suited to this course.

The work requires a sound understanding of mathematical fundamentals and IT skills.

An Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits.

Students must be employed in a role that enables them access to appropriate workplace tasks.

AIE will confirm the suitability of the learner's employment prior to commencement.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Participants are assessed via completion of required tasks and a demonstration of skills e.g. written, verbal, assignments, practical work, classroom participation and projects.

This program is to be delivered in a classroom-based environment and in a simulated work environment at the RTO’s site – known as the Engineering Workshop (to provide access to appropriate environments for the practical components of the course).

The simulated work environment typically reflects:

  • The use of full scale equipment
  • Performing tasks similar to those performed in the workplace
  • Performing tasks within the same timelines that would be expected in the workplace

It will also be achieved by:

  • Accessible compliance documentation (SOPs, SDS, Operator manual)
  • Various types of materials. Machines and tools
  • Emphasis on effective communication to encourage team work
  • Designated areas for using tools and machining items

Learners will also be supplied with Learner Guides for each unit delivered and will work through the learning activities during self-study time. Learning activities will give learners the opportunity to practice and prepare for assessments.

Delivery of theory content

Students will also be required to allocate some study time to undertake reading and learning activities outside of the scheduled sessions (e.g. self-directed learning through the online portal).

All theory content will occur within designated classrooms at the RTO’s site. This will be delivered through structured training sessions from a qualified Trainer / Assessor employed by the RTO. At these training sessions a qualified Trainer/ Assessor will provide the required skills and knowledge as per the unit content and will ensure the learning is imparted. The Trainer/Assessor will have designated session plans to reference to ensure the learning content is provided consistently to all students. (Please see individual Unit of Competency Session Plans for further details).

Delivery of Practical Skills

As part of this course students will also be required to undertake practical activities related to the course content. For such practical components / skills, the Trainer will  ensure the students have access to the simulated environment at the RTO (The Engineering Workshop) for practical training to occur.

Students are not able to partake in the practical training unless they are wearing appropriate PPEs.

During any practical application, students are rotated through the equipment and spend minimal time not involved in practical activities. All tools and equipment are utilised at all times, giving students optimal access to develop the skills required to gain competency.

Students will be monitored for their operating ability and use of machines / equipment and will be assessed on this ability. Students requiring any additional operating practice will be advised (where possible) of the scheduled practice availability. The simulated work environment will be operating at full capacity at all times, and students will be rotated through machines/ equipment.

Students need to complete Twelve (12) units of competency, consisting of:

  • Four (4) Core units
  • a minimum of Seven (7) Group A electives and
  • a maximum of One (1) Group B

Electives may be able to be adjusted to suit individual requirements of a learner.

The CEO must approve any changes to unit selection.

Should the student successfully complete only one or more of the Units of Competency, but not all required 12 Units of Competency for the Qualification, the student will be issued with a Statement of Attainment at the time of completion or withdrawal.

It is encouraged that students undertake work placement as part of this course to extend their experience and employer networks.

Students should plan to complete this during the designated work placement weeks and school holiday times over the course duration.

Students will need to attend 1 day per week over 2 years or 2 day per week for 1 year duration.

Refund arrangements are provided within the Student Information Handbook and must be read and understood prior to enrolment.

RPL Assessment only training could be completed by candidates that have around 6 years of industry experience.

Information about your knowledge and experience will be aligned to the relevant components of the qualification. You will receive recognition for the units or modules in which you have demonstrated either competency or similarity of learning outcomes, and you will only need to complete any remaining units to receive the qualification.

To apply for RPL simply submit an enquiry so we can provide you with the appropriate application form. Along with this form you will also need to supply any relevant documentation that supports your application including existing qualifications and evidence of your previous roles.

The cost for RPL in a VET course will vary depending on the number of units of competency you successfully gain recognition for, the fee structure of the course and any assessment or training required. You will be provided with an approximate cost for your unique situation when you apply.

Australian Institute Of Engineering as a Registered Training Organisation recognises the Australian Qualifications Framework qualifications and Statement of Attainments issued by any other Australian Registered Training Organisation.

Students are encouraged to submit any requests for credit from previous studies at the time of enrolment, to ensure they are not enrolling in units they may not need to undertake.

In order to apply for exemption/credit transfer from units completed at another training organisation, you will need to complete an Application for credit transfer Form available from AIE campus, or team, or a copy of the form can be obtained from AIE Website.

Your completed Application for credit transfer form together with attached documentary evidence (certified copy of Qualification/Statement of Attainment) to support your request for exemption/credit transfer should be submitted directly to AIE either in person or by email. Requests without documentary evidence will not be processed and will be returned to students. There are no fees attached to Credit Transfers.
